Frequently Asked Notary Questions

Q. What do I need to bring to get a document notarized?

A. You need to bring:

  • The document to be notarized (DO NOT sign it beforehand)

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID)

  • All parties who need to sign the document must be present in person

If you're unsure about what's required for your specific document, call us at 877-340-8822 before your appointment.

Q. Can I sign the document before coming to the notary?

A. No, you should NOT sign the document before your appointment. The notary must witness you signing the document in their presence. Signing beforehand invalidates the notarization. Bring the document unsigned, and we'll guide you through the signing process.

Q. Do all parties need to be present for notarization?

A. Yes, everyone who needs to sign the document must appear in person before the notary with valid identification. New Mexico law requires the notary to personally verify the identity of each signer and witness their signature. We cannot notarize documents for absent parties.

Q. What forms of identification do you accept?

A. We accept current, valid government-issued photo identification including:

  • Driver's license (any state)

  • State-issued ID card

  • U.S. or foreign passport

  • Military ID card

  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

The ID must not be expired and must clearly show your photo and signature.

Q. How much does notary service cost?

A. Notary fees in New Mexico are regulated by state law. The maximum fee for a standard notarization is set by the New Mexico Secretary of State. For current pricing and information about documents requiring multiple notarizations, please call 877-340-8822.

Q. Can you notarize documents in languages other than English?

A. Yes, we can notarize documents written in other languages. However, the notary certificate (the notary's official statement) will be in English, as required by New Mexico law. You are responsible for understanding the contents of any document you sign. If needed, you should bring a translator.

Q. Do you offer mobile notary services?

A. Mobile notary services may be available for certain situations throughout New Mexico, including hospital visits, nursing homes, business offices, or locations requiring multiple notarizations. Mobile services include additional travel fees based on distance and are subject to scheduling availability. Call 877-340-8822 to discuss your mobile notary needs and pricing.

Q. What is the difference between notarization and apostille?

A. Notarization is the process where a notary public verifies identities and witnesses document signing. An apostille is an additional certification that authenticates the notary's signature and seal for international use in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

If you need a document for use in another country, you'll typically need both: first notarization, then apostille certification. We offer both services.

Q. Can you notarize copies of documents?

A. New Mexico notaries can certify copies of certain documents, but not all. We CAN certify copies of:

  • Documents you originally issued (like your business records)

  • Non-government documents

We CANNOT certify copies of:

  • Birth certificates

  • Death certificates

  • Marriage certificates

  • Any vital records (these require certified copies from the issuing agency)

Call us to confirm if your document can be copied and certified.

Q. Do you provide notary services for real estate closings?

A. Yes, we can notarize real estate documents including deeds, mortgages, and closing paperwork. However, we are not a title company and do not conduct full real estate closings. If you need documents notarized as part of a real estate transaction, we're happy to help. For full closing services, contact a title company.

Q. Do you provide notary services for immigration documents?

A. Yes, we can notarize various immigration-related documents including affidavits of support, consent forms, and other required paperwork. However, please note that some immigration documents require specific USCIS procedures. For fingerprinting required for immigration applications, ABQ Fingerprinting provides FBI-compliant fingerprint cards. Call 877-340-8822 to confirm which services apply to your specific immigration needs.
