What is an ATF EFT FILE

ATF Electronic Forms Transfer (EFT) is the official electronic submission system used by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for processing National Firearms Act (NFA) applications. This modern system provides faster processing and better tracking than traditional paper submissions.

Why Choose Electronic Over Paper Submissions?

  •  Faster Processing: Electronic submissions are processed more quickly than paper forms

  • Real-Time Status: Track your application status online through the ATF system

  • Immediate Confirmation: Receive confirmation of successful submission

  • No Lost Applications: Electronic filing eliminates mail delivery  risks

  • Professional Service: We handle the technical aspects and ensure accuracy

  • Digital Fingerprinting: High-quality prints captured and submitted electronically

Our NFA fingerprinting services use advanced LiveScan technology to capture high-quality digital fingerprints for ATF Form 1 and Form 4 submissions. Whether you're applying for a suppressor, short-barreled rifle (SBR), short-barreled shotgun (SBS), or other NFA items, our ATF-compliant electronic fingerprinting ensures your application meets all Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives requirements. Gun trust applicants can have multiple responsible persons fingerprinted at the same appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About ATF-EFT

Q. What is the difference between ATF-EFT and regular fingerprint cards?

A. ATF-EFT is a digital fingerprint file that uploads directly to your ATF eForm application. Traditional paper FD-258 cards must be physically mailed to the ATF, adding 2-4 weeks to processing and risking damage or loss. With ATF-EFT, your fingerprints are captured digitally, emailed immediately, and provided on a complimentary flash drive. You can submit your Form 1 or Form 4 the same day you're fingerprinted, significantly speeding up approval. Electronic submission is the ATF's preferred method.

Q. How many times can I use my ATF-EFT file?

A. Your ATF-EFT file can be used for unlimited Form 1 and Form 4 applications. Whether you're purchasing one suppressor or multiple NFA items, you can reuse the same file. It doesn't expire as long as your fingerprints haven't changed significantly. This is why we provide both email and flash drive copies - you'll have easy access for all future applications. Many customers use their EFT file for years without needing new fingerprints.

Q. What if I lose my ATF-EFT file?

A. We provide your EFT file in two formats - email and complimentary flash drive. If you lose one, you have the other. We recommend saving the file in multiple locations: email, flash drive, cloud storage, and your computer. If you lose all copies, contact us at 877-340-8822 and we may retrieve your file from our backup system for a small fee.

Q. Can I use my ATF-EFT file for a gun trust with multiple responsible persons?

A. No, each responsible person on your gun trust needs their own individual ATF-EFT file. You cannot share files between people, even within the same trust. However, we make it easy - bring all responsible persons to any location for same-day service, and each will receive their own file via email and flash drive. Many attorneys recommend group appointments so everyone has files ready for submission.

Q. Do I need a new EFT file for each NFA item I purchase?

A. No! One EFT file works for multiple NFA items. Whether you're filing for one suppressor or ten, use the same file for all Form 1 and Form 4 applications. You only need new fingerprints if your prints have changed due to injury, the ATF requests them, or several years have passed. Most customers use their EFT file for years without re-fingerprinting.

Q. How long does it take to get my ATF-EFT file?

A. Your EFT file is emailed within minutes of your fingerprinting appointment. The fingerprinting process takes 5-10 minutes. You receive your flash drive before leaving. This means you can be fingerprinted in the morning and submit your ATF application that afternoon. Same-day service is available at all six New Mexico locations.

Q. What do I need to bring for ATF-EFT fingerprinting?

A. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID) and any paperwork from your firearms dealer. You don't need ATF forms - we only capture fingerprints and create the file. Payment accepted via credit card, debit card, or cash (cash at Albuquerque location only). The entire process takes less than 15 minutes.

Q. Is ATF-EFT accepted for all NFA applications?

A. Yes, ATF-EFT files are accepted for all ATF eForm applications including Form 1 (making your own NFA item), Form 4 (purchasing NFA items), and Form 5 (tax-exempt transfers). The ATF strongly encourages electronic filing and fingerprint submission. The eForm system is specifically designed for EFT files. If unsure about your specific application, contact your dealer or call 877-340-8822.

Q. How long are ATF-EFT fingerprints valid?

A. The ATF doesn't set a specific expiration for EFT files. Fingerprints are generally valid indefinitely unless your prints have changed due to injury, scarring, or significant aging. Most people use the same EFT file for many years. If you've had finger injuries or work in occupations causing finger wear, consider new prints every few years. If the ATF has concerns, they'll request new fingerprints during application review.

Q. Can I use my EFT file if I move to a different state?

A. Yes, your ATF-EFT file is valid nationwide regardless of where you live. NFA applications are federal applications processed by the ATF, not state agencies. If you get fingerprinted in New Mexico and move to Texas, Arizona, or anywhere else, your file remains valid for future applications. The file follows you wherever you go - another advantage over paper cards tied to specific timeframes.

Q. What if my background check is rejected or delayed? Can you help with NICS appeals and VAF forms?

A. If your ATF background check is rejected or delayed, there are several steps you can take:

Fingerprint Card Submission to NICS: If your initial check was delayed or denied through NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System), we can provide official fingerprint cards that you can submit directly to the FBI for a more thorough background check. This often resolves delays or denials caused by mistaken identity or incomplete records.

VAF (Voluntary Appeal File) Process: If you've been wrongly delayed or denied, you can file a VAF form with the FBI. This creates a permanent file with your correct information (including fingerprints) to prevent future issues. We can provide the fingerprint cards required for your VAF submission.

Appeal Process Assistance: While we cannot provide legal advice, we can supply the necessary fingerprint cards and documentation required for:

  • NICS appeals through the FBI

  • ATF appeals for NFA applications

  • VAF submissions to prevent future delays

Our certified technicians ensure your fingerprints are captured with the highest quality to support your appeal process. We can also help you understand what documentation you'll need and where to submit it.
